Steam Ghetto W.I.P. by TheUncannyKen Steam Ghetto W.I.P. by TheUncannyKen
Now this is a wip.
It is far from done, I'm currently modeling a few props that will make the scene more lively. I'm also working on the lighting (this here is just the basic mental ray physical sun & sky), the shaders for the street lamps and windows, and a few touch ups here and there. I'd like to get this kind of rendering:

[link]

I'm sure I could easily still spend 170 hours on this thing. But the show must go on... I've made tons of mistakes and learned alot on this one, this is my first "real" step in the 3D graphics world. I still have alot to learn, but I know that I'll have a much different approach on my next scene.
Next year I'll be learning Character modeling with maya/zbrush.....

All you 3d guys out there, please tell me what you think ( all the other guys too if you wanna :) )

Steam Ghetto W.I.P. by ~astrokevin is still a work-in-progress, but you can already see what great potential this picture has. It is a impressively rendered piece that has a realistic, steam era-fashioned feel that really brings you back to days long ago. An outstanding piece of work! Good evening

I'm in the process of planning a spot the difference flash game with a steam punk style.
Would you be interested in contributing some artwork towards the game?

C'est super cool! Je serais pas capable d'en faire autant alors je dis chapeau! Bien que ça ne soit pas aussi abouti que tu le voulais, l'ambiance est déjà pas mal posée.:)
Je fave!

Whoa :) this looks great! lots of nice details :)

Crit:
Bumpmap/texture on the road looks undefined contra the rest of the image.

Much empty room in front. maybe move the detailed nice car closer to the camera and get ridd of the emptyness?

Far behind. Outside the "city gates" its nothing

Im sure you tired of this project now :P and want to move on :)

so far so VERY VERY GOOD!

I would reccomend changing up the sidewalk texture a slight bit as it seems a bit distorted. Easily changed by how many times the texture repeats itself, but I'm impressed overall. Good work.

Great work! Have you seen Jeremy Engleman's tutorials on Gnomon? He has some out that deal with lighting scenes exactly like this. It would be well work the view.

I'm ashamed, I don't even know who this obvious genius is lol!
I've watched dozens of gnomon dvd's but only the 2D ones (concept art, digital painitng, design etc.....)
Do you know if I can download these 3D dvd's for free? I only found the 2D ones....

Check here: [link]

Gnomonology is great because you can purchase individual chapters. The last one is the one that will interest you. Though the last two are well worth the $8.00ea.

Also take a look here: [link]
Check out #4 for lighting. Not a 'tutorial' but well worth hearing why he's done certain things in his process. These are free. (smile)

You're way ahead of what I see in others work. But, you sound like me and are always looking for ways to do things better. (smile) I'm always checking out how others do things as it opens ideas for my own work. I think I pay the bills for many of those who have tuts on Gnomon. ha ha

WOW great! i like the syle and muted colors...even though its all maya phy sun, i would also light my scene, with some bounced light colors, and tone down the relfec on your metal shaders... maby with a fractal bump?.... Lighten up your bump on the curb, and ,maby add a bevel to its edge.... soften it...... too hard for somewhere where people walk allot.... Love to see some environmental atmo with some fog.... easy in maya... Then you would get some light god-rays. The car would be cool if it was in the cast light.. with some rad contrast to show the detail of the car model. And... maby some grass in-between the cracks in the road.. or somthing in the green pallet....

I'm no pro... i do work with maya doing video game commercials (just started), don't hesitate to get into characters!!!! should be learnin both at the same time to bridge the knowlage gap. Similar techneques that will build each other! I only learned 3D from scratch last year! Keep at it... gave allot of crit ciz its that close to fricken perfect.

Thanks alot for all these constructive crits.

I'm working on the bounced lights, and I agree the green palette is really necessary. I already had the grass in mind, mayby a tree also....

I'll be learning characters next year, I' d love to add one in the scene once finished.

Very fresh stuff in your gallery!

C'est du très bon boulot, t'as du niveau.
Mais tu ne fais que du high poly? J'aimerais savoir t'es a combien de tri avec tout çà.

Et aussi, si tu touches au normal map, ce que ca donnerait en low poly. Enfin çà, c'est si t'as rien d'autre a faire ^^

This is really a fantastic piece, and congratulations on the DD. My only comment is that it could use a little life; characters would be ideal, but I imagine would ratchet the amount of work required up a significant amount. Something else organic other than people would work; someone mentioned steam, maybe clouds or fog, plant life of some kind. Anything to take the edge off the sterility.

It really is a fantastic piece though, very nicely done!
